Study in Selvages

This week, I began working on my first ever "Selvage Quilt".  I've been noticing them quite a bit lately.  Maybe because I've finally decided to use some of my selvages.  One item that I need to correct is how I trim them off of my fabric.  I need to allow at least 3/4" to one inch" of fabric showing with the selvage, so that when I sew them together, one can see the different colors of fabric, rather than just the writing.  I'm in a "use it up" mode, so I plan to use what I presently have.  I've taken pictures of two ways to put them together.

First Design

Second Design
The first design seems to focus more on the selvages.  However, half of the selvages are upside down, so if you hang the quilt on a wall, you would need to strain to read all of the writing.  Also, the inner large squares would need lots of quilting, which at this point, I would not feel comfortable with doing the quilting myself.

I still have lots of time to decide since I plan to make 63 squares; each at 6" finished.
(7) across and (9) down or 42" x 54".

There will also be plenty of time to search the web to see what other designs I may find.

  1. I tend to like the 2nd one, but you may find other ideas online. I have never really saved my selvsge's, shame on me.

    1. Thank you for your input as to the arrangement. I have plenty more selvages to use before I make my final decision.

  2. I always love the selvedge look. But one comment you made about the quilting.....don't feel you have to "over quilt" those white squares. Our battings today allow for 6-8" between quilting lines. So dense quilting is not always needed and it tends to stiffen a quilt. A few good straight lines would be perfect for this.

    1. Thank you for the encouragement about the quilting. Over the past year, I've sent most of my tops out for someone else to do the machine quilting. Maybe I can be brave and quilt this one myself.
